WHAT PEOPLE SAID

Painting is alive and well in Chicago, as indicated by these vibrant canvases. Fascinated by color and the materiality of oil paint, Sandler applies impasto layers, which suggest landmasses and horizons.

JULIA LEACH,
THE NEW YORK TIMES
(DEC 2007)

Arielle Sandler's abstract paintings are the stuff of painting, a painter's painting- and in their expression and gestural and forceful application move considerably beyond palette painting. In many of these works the landscape is abstractly rendered to create a three-dimensionality of painting. They roll with color and gesture of form presenting a visual tension that is sometimes subdued, sometimes riveting and emotional, and in still other works, harmonious. A push and pull in her application of paint presents topographical and aerial views alongside the minutia and otherness of something so detailed and only found in the stroke or within a color schmer. The surface of her paintings are lush and gooey and articulate where sky, land, ground meet in formal juxtapositions- to create the emotive.

Arielle is a great painter (we've seen her work in person, and they're all about the surface). Bright colors are slathered like icing.
